IN MEMORIAM

Acad. Prof. Dr. Eugen Mody

The last year, by the end of September 1999, Acad. Prof. Dr. Eugen Mody left us eternity. A great personality in the Laboratory Medicine in Romania, founder and Honour President of our Foundation, an outstanding scientist, he was a fervent and active member in the last 4 decades for the progress of this speciality both in the Old Union of Medical Societies as well as after 1990 in the New Romanian Society of Clinical Laboratory. He did not restrict his activity only to his didactic duties but his scientific and pedagogic area extended much beyond in our country and abroad. By his scientific personality well appreciated in other countries, he facilitated the normal and useful cooperative connections of our Society with other similar scientific institutions in Europe and USA.

He was born on 22 May 1927 in Turgu-Mures where he finished the Medicine Faculty in 1925. In 1966 he obtained the title of <169>Doctor in Medical SciencesŞ in the speciality of Biochemistry. He passed through all didactic stages at the discipline of Biochemistry, from Assistant to Professor for Clinical Biochemistry and Immunopathology at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Targu-Mures. Together with his didactic activity at Faculty he was assigned as Head Doctor of the Central laboratory of the Destrictual and University Hospital of Turgu-Mures.

After 1990 he was elected as active member of Academy of Medical Sciences of Romania, Honor Member of the Romanian Society for Clinical Laboratory and of Hungarian Society of Clinical Pathology.

He gained 5 scholarships of Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and worked at the Institute of Physiologic Chemistry of Ruhr University in Biochemistry, at the Institute of Biochemistry at the University of Saarland, at the Institute of Physiologic Chemistry of Deutscher Akademisher Austrauschdienst and at the Experimental Medicine Institute of Koln University. The list of publications of the Professor contains 160 works, out of which 119 were published in our country and 41 abroad. He edited 7 university text-books as single author and published 3 scientific monographs. The last fourth monograph entitled "Clinical Biochemistry (Patochemistry)" is a large text book where he brought his long fruitful and valuable experience in this field together with other specialists like Dr. chem Ileana Funduc and Dr. biol. Ruxandra Alexandrescu.

He was active member of 5 Scientific Societies of our country and of 3 Societies from abroad.

Of his scientific innovations the following should be mentioned:

From the data above exposed we can make a real image on the professional and moral status of the professor, his passion, his generosity and abnegation in the same time for scientific work. The dimensions of his personality have been revealed by his consideration, admiration and altruistic aid to all colleagues who manifested an affinity for medical laboratory work. He had a passionate will and perseverance to raise the scientific level of this speciality in our country in order to reach the same performances as abroad.

A merciless illness has uprooted him from his medium where he was so much appreciated at an age when a scientist who possessed such a vast professional experience could have been still useful for the society who beloved him.

It is our duty to transform this posthumous homage in one of admiration, of honouring and devouting remembrance for our illustrious and distinguished mentor and researcher.

Let us keep a moment recollection for his memory!
